Sylvia Beach Women’s Literary Retreat

August 23 – 26, 2018
Sylvia Beach Hotel ~ Newport, Oregon

Unplug, unwind, and sleep with your favorite author!

If you’re a passionate reader who loves to learn from books, talk about books and transform through books, then this retreat is perfect for you. And let’s not forget the Pacific Ocean, which will be the extraordinary backdrop for our retreat experience.

Our founder/director, Karen Ely, considers Sylvia Beach to be her heroine . . . a woman who nearly single-handedly changed the literary world in the early to mid-1900s. Sylvia, an American, founded Paris’ world-famous Shakespeare and Company in 1919. Originally located in in Paris at 12 rue de l’Odéon, the shop was half bookstore and half lending library. It attracted and supported the great expat writers of the time — Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Eliot, Pound and Joyce — including some of the century’s most compelling female voices: Djuna Barnes, Gertrude Stein, Janet Flanner, Kay Boyle, and Mina Loy.

The retreat will provide a perfect mind, body, spirit retreat experience. Ensconced overlooking Oregon’s dramatic Pacific coast and inspired by the work of great authors, we will gather in circle each day to share our thoughts and expand our possibilities . . . with time for quiet reflection gathering thoughts, writing, reading and savoring the wonders of the ocean and the power of the written word.

In a safe, nourishing environment, you’ll embrace a new way of being, one which grows from our literary discussions and experiential exercises. Each day will begin with a delightful breakfast in the hotel followed by time to meander along the beach, read quietly on the hotel deck, engage in enlightening conversations and delight in Newport’s quaint shops. Our afternoons will be spent in circle experiencing and learning how great books can be a catalyst for our growth and transformation. Our evenings will include a communal meal filled with inspiring literary discussions, laughter and good food.

~ Open you to other worlds, other cultures and other times.
~ Provide a great teaching tool.
~ Increase your empathy and compassion.
~ Expand your sense of gratitude.
~ Give you the opportunity to share with other like-minded women AND
~ Provide an opportunity to change your life.

We have reserved seven of the hotel’s 21 rooms for our retreat: Agatha Christie, John Steinbeck, Alice Walker, Tolkien, William Shakespeare, Gertrude Stein and Oscar Wilde.  You can also reserve one of the other rooms if you prefer.  Prior to the retreat, each participant will be asked to read a book by the author of the room she has chosen . . . and when in circle, we’ll each discuss “our” authors, what we learned, how we’ve changed our outlook, and how we’ve grown . . . or not.  Together we’ll gain a greater appreciation for a wide-variety of authors’ work and we’ll learn more about ourselves in the process.

Located in Newport on the central Oregon coast, Sylvia Beach Hotel sits on a bluff above Nye Beach and the Pacific Ocean. Originally built in 1912 as the New Cliff House hotel, the structure was renovated in the 1980s to become a 21-room literary-themed bed and breakfast with a homey and eclectic charm that attracts readers, writers, and travelers from all over the world. It has been listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Each room includes details and books to reflect the life and writings of 21 different authors. Guests can enjoy a book with a view in the quiet and cozy haven of the third-floor oceanfront library. The allure is beach quiet—gathering one’s thoughts, writing, reading, and savoring the wonder of ocean and sky and literature.
